If you’ve never had another passenger hassle you during one of your flights, consider yourself lucky! Most travelers have come across a passenger who irritated them at some point during a flight. The more you fly, the more often you’ll see (or smell) passengers who are clearly not the rest of your favorite character on the flight. In a recent survey, travelers were asked what behaviors of other passengers annoyed them.
Below are the 10 most annoying passengers on flights, as well as the percentage of respondents who found their behaviors annoying.
1) Passengers kicking the seat
Percentage of respondents: 59.11%
Unsurprisingly, passengers found those kicking the backs of their seats to be one of the most annoying things a fellow passenger can do. As a direct physical attack on travelers’ personal space and comfort, it makes sense for it to be at the top of the list.
2) Passengers who get drunk and rebel
Percentage of respondents: 59.11%
Drunk and unruly passengers tied up with kicks in the seat for 1St. place, and it’s no wonder why. Once you’re thousands of feet in the air in a metal tube, there’s no getting away from a situation. Unfortunately, some passengers cannot handle their alcohol, which leads to very uncomfortable and even dangerous situations like the one shown below.

In the best of cases, you will have to put up with the snoring of someone who had a few too many. In the worst cases, there have been threats of physical violence. This particular behavior can go from annoying to dangerous pretty quickly.
3) Passengers who smell bad (or also Okay)
Percentage of respondents: 48%
Nearly half of those surveyed said passengers who smell bad because of poor hygiene or who wear too much cologne annoy them. Being stuck in a giant flying tube with hundreds of other people is bad enough. Add unpleasant odors and it becomes a completely different experience.
4) Passengers who are negligent parents
Percentage of respondents: 46.81%
Behind the passengers who smell bad are parents who are not attentive during flights. Almost half of those surveyed said that parents who do not attend to their children bother them on flights. Unfortunately, this behavior often coincides with the #1 most annoying thing: kick the seat.
5) Passengers who eat food with a strong smell
Percentage of respondents: 39.8%
Similar to #3, passengers eating food with a pungent odor can bother people around them. However, these odors are not as bothersome as smelly passengers.
6) Passengers Hogging The Armrest
Percentage of respondents: 39.07%
Nearly two in five respondents thought armrest-hogging passengers are annoying. He probably understands what they mean if he’s been stuck in the middle seat with two armrest pigs.
7) Passengers who recline the seat completely
Percentage of respondents: 38.25%
Reclining your seat on an airplane has been a debate among travelers for years. Still, about 38% of those surveyed agreed that this was annoying behavior.
8) Passengers who talk to you too much
Percentage of respondents: 29.87%
Getting stuck in a conversation is a nightmare for many travelers, but at least on land, the option to walk away is available. Thousands of feet in the air, there’s no escaping a chatty passenger. However, starting the flight with a headset can help avoid getting caught up in unwanted conversation.
9) Passengers boarding or disembarking out of turn
Percentage of respondents: 29.60%
Everyone has witnessed eager passengers jumping out of their seats and running down the aisle just to wait for the plane doors to open. Maybe they’re afraid of missing a connecting flight, or maybe that’s just the way they are. Either way, nearly 3 in 10 respondents found this annoying.
10) Listening passengers have their headphones too loud
Percentage of respondents: 28.96%
Airplanes are noisy and often drown out a lot of background noise. If someone’s music is so loud that you can hear it, it’s probably too loud. This was just behind passengers who skipped their boarding slot, with just under 3 in 10 saying that loud music or movies bother them.
Several more upset riders who didn’t make the top 10 were riders who take off their shoes, riders who use the overhead space away from their seat, and riders who PDA too much. One thing is clear. Packing a few hundred people together in a confined space for a few hours can certainly lead to some behavior that annoys fellow passengers.
